Queensland State Titles 2026 - Town of 1770

Queensland State Spearfishing Championships 2026

The AUFQ Queensland State Spearfishing Titles will be held from 6–8 August 2026 in Agnes Water / Town of 1770, on Queensland’s Discovery Coast. This stunning location provides access to the southern Great Barrier Reef, with possible dive sites including Fitzroy Reef, Boult Reef, Lamont Reef, Pancake Creek, Bustard Head and Jansen Rock.

The event is hosted by the Tweed Gold Coast Freedivers in partnership with the Australian Underwater Federation Queensland (AUFQ).

Competition Format

The Titles are run as a True-Pairs competition in line with AUF’s focus on Safe, Sustainable, Selective Spearfishing.

Events include the Open Spearfishing Championship, Ladies, Juniors, Sub-Juniors, Veterans, Film-Fishing, and Club team categories.

Competitions run for 4–6 hours each day, with weigh-ins held each afternoon in Agnes Water.

This page is just a summary - competitors should familiarise themselves with the "A Section" and "B Section" rules along with the standard Disclaimer.

Call for Boats

The hosting club has limited boats available.

Offshore-capable vessels are essential due to the long distances to some dive sites (30+ nautical miles) and the potential for rough seas.

If you have a suitable boat and can assist, please contact the organisers as early as possible. Boat owners receive a contribution towards fuel costs.

True-Pairs Diving Format

  • The Queensland State Spearfishing Titles are run as a True-Pairs event.

  • Two divers of similar ability compete together, alternating roles of diver and surface safety buddy.

  • One Up – One Down rule: only one diver is underwater at a time; the other monitors from the surface.

  • Both divers must stay within 30 metres of their float and in visual contact at all times.

  • The float setup includes:

  • One short line (4m) for the surface diver

  • One long line (up to 30m) for the diver underwater

  • Divers alternate roles throughout the competition.

  • Both divers may each carry one speargun; spare guns must be unloaded and secured to the float.

  • Disqualification applies if both divers are submerged simultaneously.

  • Each True-Pair can weigh in only one of each eligible species per day (except special categories for juniors/women).

⚠️ Key Safety Rules

  • Always monitor your buddy’s dive from the surface.

  • Make eye contact after every ascent (blackouts can occur up to 15 seconds post-dive).

  • Stay within depths and conditions where you can safely rescue each other.

  • Follow all Fisheries and Marine Park regulations – breaches mean disqualification.

Essential Safety Equipment

Competitors for spearfishing must have the following Essential Safety Equipment at all times during the competition:

  • Compliant Float i.e. minimum size of 7 litres; coloured Red, Yellow or Orange; fitted with an International “Code Flag Alpha”; self-righting

  • Whistle and signaling mirror*

  • Orange plastic safety sheet*

  • Sheathed diver’s knife

  • Weight belt fitted with quick release buckle

  • Cover to spear points

* available at sign-on – whistle and mirror $5.00 each

Additional recommendations:

  • Full wetsuit or lycra suit with hood (protection from jellyfish, sun, coral)

  • Protective footwear for reef exits

  • Carry water/food on your float to avoid relying on safety boats

Safety Support

  • Dedicated safety boats will patrol throughout the event, equipped with first aid kits, oxygen, defibrillator, and communications.

  • Competitors should rely on their buddy system first and signal for help using their safety gear if needed.

🌊 Join us in 1770 for three days of competitive spearfishing in one of Queensland’s most spectacular marine environments – and dive safely, sustainably, and selectively.
